The Divine Feminine

Sophianic Spirituality ("Sophia" is the Greek name for Wisdom, the feminine face of the Divine) or Sophiology, is one of the most exciting developments in contemporary European spirituality and theology. It is a movement (in philosophy, poetry, theology and the history of ideas) that re-emerged in Russia during the latter part of the 19th Century.

Strange that champions of the Divine Feminine should emerge within the most patriarchal of Christian traditions!

Nowadays the long neglected 'Sophia' is revealing herself across the church traditions, and beyond, especially in Russia, Germany and Britain. The movement is also growing in North America. 'Wisdom Spirituality' as it is also known, first emerged within the Judeo-Christian heritage nearly 3000 years ago in the Courts of King Solomon. In recent centuries, Orthodox, Catholic, Protestants and Anglicans have witnessed to Her presence. Even those who are not devotees of Sophia enjoy following Her story since the dawn of time.

Wisdom is a truly ecumenical (worldwide) figure and not the property of any one particular ideology or religion. Sophia is consequently a link to other religions and disciplines, such as Goddess and Earth studies and The Divine Mother. I refer, for example, to the seminal work of the Jungian, Edward C Whitmont: 'The Return of the Goddess' (1983); Monica Sjöö & Barbara Mor's 'The Great Cosmic Mother' (1987); Caitlin Matthews' 'Sophia: Goddess of Wisdom' and in 1995 - Andrew Harvey's 'The Return of the Mother' - just to give you a taster of related themes.
